Kia Ora Team Bayview
Last year we introduced our class paepae. This is how we start each morning and ground ourselves for the day. Each morning we start the day with a karakia. We have a range of karakia that we use but our most common one is the following:
Kia karakia tātou
Tuia ki runga Unite from above
Tuia ki raro Unite from below
Tuia ki waho Unite from the outside
Tuia ki roto Unite from the inside
Tuia ki te here tāngata All people united together
Ka rongo te pō The night listens
Ka rongo te ao The day listens
Haumi e, hui e, tāiki e We join, gather, and unite
You could ask your child to share this with you and to tell you more about their morning routine in class.
You may recall that earlier this year I shared the school pepeha as this is also part of the paepae.
Covid Disruptions
It has now been 4 weeks since we moved back to expecting masks to be worn by our Year 4-6 learners. I am happy to report that because of our precautions we had had minimal disruption to our learning and low numbers of learners reporting as covid positive. Thank you for working alongside us to keep the disruptions minimal.
Due to the low numbers of covid infection at this time we will move to masks being strongly encouraged for our learners. Please note that the wearing of masks is stopping the spread of illnesses such as colds, flu and the current gastro bug going around the school. If you are worried about your child becoming sick then you may want to ensure they are wearing their mask at school while inside. We do have masks at school we are able to provide if you forget to pack one in their bag. We will continue with our hygiene practices. We thank you in advance for keeping your children home when they are unwell, this is definitely helping us keep the spread of illness to a minimum in classes. If your child becomes sick at school we will contact you and ask you to come and collect them.
We have been affected with the number of relief teachers we can use. Some of our relievers have been covid affected and at times we have struggled to get a reliever for a sick teacher. In these situations we have and will continue to split a class amongst similarly aged classes. Please know this is a last resort.
Parent Helpers
Thank you to the parents who offered to run the Book Fair for us when teachers were unable to. You really made a difference and allowed children to come and purchase a book. A huge thank you to Heather Walton (Mrs Staples mum) for coming in and opening the book fair during our feedback meetings.
Thank you also to the parents who help run the breakfast club each morning in habitat 7 and to the parents who have come on school trips to keep adult to child ratios manageable and safe.
We know it has been a while since we have asked for parent helpers but please know that we can’t run many of the events we would like to without your support. As we move into spring and summer we are hoping to hold more events for our learners and hope you may be able to support us with these as well.
Mid Year Reports and Feedback Meetings
It was lovely to see so many parents and caregivers come into school to meet with our teachers and to have their children celebrate learning. I noticed lots of smiles from both adults and children. Your children get a real buzz from sharing their learning with you. Thank you for giving them your time. Our next reporting cycle will be in term 4. You will receive an end of year written report similar to the mid year report which gives a summary of your child’s learning and progress over the year.
Cross Country
This year we will be holding our school cross country on 1st September. There will be a separate Junior and Senior run and we will advise the times closer to this date.
The interschool cross country is being held on 15th September at Kaipatiki Park. The winners of each age group from Y4-6 in our school cross country will represent Bayview School at this event.
Whānau Hui
We are very happy to be able to re-engage with whānau in a range of different ways. On Wednesday 31st August we will be holding a whānau hui for our Māori whānau. We would love to meet with you and get to know you a bit better and share with you what we have been striving for over the last few years for our Māori learners. If your child identifies as Māori you will receive a personalised invite about this in the coming week.
Staff Changes
Sadly we have two teachers who have decided to move on from Bayview School to pursue their careers.
After 10 years at Bayview School Mr Jacob Allison has decided to seek a promotion and will be starting as the new Deputy Principal of Glenfield Intermediate School in term 4 this year. Jacob started at Bayview as a first year teacher and soon became a learning group leader and then in school leader for the Kahui Ako. Jacob became Assistant Principal in 2019 and has really developed his leadership ability. Our tamariki will still get to benefit from his talents as most of our Year 6 learners tend to go to GIS!
Ms Samantha Mottram has recently won a position at Nukumea Primary School, the new school that has been built in Orewa North. Sam will be starting this role at the beginning of term 4. Sam started at Bayview School as a first year teacher and managed to survive her first two years of teaching whilst in a global pandemic! She has shown resilience, flexibility, and humour in the face of many challenges. Sam aspires to be in leadership and has been offered an in school leadership position at Nukumea. We have been very fortunate to have secured a teacher for term 4, Kara Napier. Kara has been teaching in the UK and is returning to Aotearoa in September. Kara has led the junior school in her current role and will bring with her a wealth of knowledge and skills.
We will farewell both Jacob and Samantha at the end of term 3.
BOT Elections
You will have received the results of our recent BOT elections. Four parents put their names forward and as a result we do not have to hold an election and these four people take office as our new Board from 15th September:
Brad Norman
Thads Cooke
Shar Lee-Li
Mariette Kemp
The first meeting for this new Board will be on Thursday 22nd September where we will elect our Presiding Member (Chairperson).
New Learners Joining Bayview School
A huge welcome to the following learners who have started at Bayview School!
Bonham Pancho, Reign Churchward, Juan Umandap
We look forward to developing our connections with you over this year and to give every child at Bayview the best learning opportunities. We are stronger when we work together.
