KIA ORA TEAM BAYVIEW
Well the colder weather is making it’s presence known! Just a reminder that you can purchase a school beanie from Janbells for $20.50 for use in terms 2 and 3 if your child really feels the cold.
PARTNERSHIP MEETINGS
On the 27th March we are holding partnership meetings where you will be able to come in and meet with your child’s teacher to hear how they have settled for the year and how they are progressing with their learning. Your child’s class teacher will be in contact with you to make a time (if they haven’t already). School will close at 12.30pm on this day to allow the teachers time to eat their lunch and then to start meetings at 1pm. They will then have a dinner break between 5.30pm – 6pm. We really hope you are able to take advantage of this time to meet with the teacher.
CELLPHONES IN SCHOOLS
At our last Board meeting our Bayview board developed the following policy regarding personal devices in school. This and all our other policies can be found on www.schooldocs.co.nz (Username: Bayview Password: icare). All our school policies are written and reviewed by the Bayview Board of Trustees as governors of the school.
Cellphones and Other Personal Digital Devices
A personal digital device is any privately owned digital device that is not part of any school-approved Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme.
Bayview School does not recommend that students bring personal digital devices to the school. These are not necessary to have during the day. However, we understand that some parents like their children to have a device to communicate with them after school. We make an exception for learners who require assistive technology, or those with medical needs that require a device for monitoring.
We discuss the school rules about personal digital devices at the beginning of the year, and throughout the year as needed. Any changes to our school rules are communicated to students and our school community.
Parent/Caregiver and student responsibilities
Smartwatches should not be used to communicate with parents/caregivers during school time. If a parent/caregiver needs to contact their child urgently during the day, they should call the office.
If a student brings a personal digital device to our school, the following guidelines apply:
- The school does not accept responsibility for lost, damaged, or stolen personal digital devices brought to the school but investigates any issues as appropriate.
- Students must hand in their device to the office at the beginning of the day, and can collect the device at the end of the day.
Personal digital devices may not be taken on EOTC events.
Students are expected to follow our Digital Technology and Online Safety policy when using personal digital devices on school property or the school network.
Inappropriate use
If we see a student using a personal digital device inappropriately, we confiscate it. After the student locks the device, we place it in the office to be collected at the end of the day.
Inappropriate use of a personal digital device may include:
- using the device when not permitted
- any sort of bullying, including online bullying
- taking photos or videos of other people without their permission
- forwarding inappropriate messages or content.
Inappropriate use of a personal digital device is managed through the school Behaviour Management, Responding to Digital Incidents, and Surrender and Retention of Personal Digital Devices policies and procedures, as appropriate.
TERM 2 DATES TO NOTE
During term 2 we have some dates you need to be aware of. The first is 4th June which is a Ministry of Education Teacher Only Day. On this day the teachers will be immersed in professional development. This is the day after the King’s birthday holiday. The second date is Monday 1st July which is another teacher-only day where all staff will be attending the Kaipatiki Kahui Ako conference. The school will be closed for instruction on both of these dates.
There is also Aotearoa’s annual Matariki holiday on Friday 28th June.
SUN SMART ACCREDITED SCHOOL
Did you know that Bayview School is a Sun Smart Accredited School? We are audited on our policy and procedures every three years by the Cancer Society and we received our last accreditation on the 28th April 2023! Our policy states that hats must be worn when our learners are outside during terms 1 and 4. At the end of this term you may like to ensure your child brings their hat home so you can give it a wash.
ENVIROSCHOOL
Did you know that we are also a Green/Gold Enviroschool? Enviroschools is an environmental action based programme where young people are empowered to design and lead sustainability projects in their schools, neighbourhoods and country. We have a dedicated ‘eco warrior’ group that meets regularly to make our school environment healthy. We run a Garden to Table programme where our learners learn how to plant and grow food that is then harvested and made into food to be consumed. We have chickens that produce free range eggs that we then use for garden to table or sell on to interested parents and staff. We have bees that produce honey that is then available for purchase. We have two orchards, one at the back of the big green playground that has feijoas, apples, plums, peaches, olives, and loquats, and we have a citrus garden over by the chicken coop.
We are also a litter free school which means we do not have rubbish bins around the school. Our learners know that they take their rubbish from their lunchboxes home with them. Other school created rubbish is carefully sorted into recyclable and non recyclable piles and dealt with accordingly. We aim to reduce our ecological footprint as much as possible.
SCHOOL FENCE
The fence and gates are almost complete! Please note once this is all in place there will be no vehicle access into the top carpark except for staff and emergency vehicles.
We again remind you that the fence is in place for the safety of our learners and ask that you please close any gates behind you if you enter the school grounds between 8.45am and 3pm.
PAID UNION MEETING REMINDER
On Friday 22nd March the majority of our teachers will be attending a paid union meeting in the afternoon. We are asking parents to please pick children up at 12.30pm that afternoon. We will only have a skeleton staff of non-union member teachers and teacher aides to supervise any learners who are not able to be picked up. These children will be supervised in the hall, watching a movie, and will be released normally at 3pm.
POLICE BLUE LIGHT ACTIVITY DAY
Bayview School has been chosen for a special NZ Police Blue Light Activity day on Thursday 4th April. During this day our learners will be involved in some interactive activities with members of the NZ Police. This is to further our learners understanding that the Police are our friends and here to help us. You may see a large police presence at and around the school that day! Please don’t be concerned it is for a very good reason 🙂

In memory of Pahul Bedi:
Last week our year 5/6 team Bayview Warriors wore black wristbands in memory of Pahul Bedi. Here is a note from the team:
“I wanted to share this with you as I think it shows the class and Bayview spirit that the Bayview Warriors that I coach, have.
Jo and I thought it would be a great way to remember Pahul by having black wristbands made with his initials on them. I mentioned this to the boys at practice the other day and they knew what it meant and were all on board with it.
Very proud of these young men and how they came together and will continue to remember Pahul and his family in the community.
Cheers Jason”
