WINTER ILLNESS

The winter illnesses have started to hit us hard. We have measles, colds and flu, a gastro bug, and covid doing the rounds. Our staff are being vigilant in reminding our learners to wash their hands frequently, cough into their elbows, and blow their noses with tissues when required. Please help us control the spread of illness by keeping your children home when they are sick and contagious. You are able to report an absence through our website or can leave a message on our school answerphone. Please note if you do not report an absence and we are unable to make contact with you, your child will be marked as truant.

Illness is also affecting our staff and our relievers pool. Recently we have had difficulty finding relievers for classes and have even had relievers call in sick! When we are unable to find a reliever we have to split classes up into other classes. I am hopeful that we don’t get to the stage where we would have to close the school due to illness as other schools have had to do recently.

MID-YEAR REPORTING TO PARENTS

At the end of this term, you will receive a mid-year report outlining the progress and achievement your child has made during the first half of the year. Reports are being sent home on Thursday 4th July. We have made a change to how we report attendance and will now use the Ministry of Education’s new guidelines:

The Ministry of Education’s new attendance categories are as follows:

  • Excellent attendance greater than 90%
  • Satisfactory attendance between 80% – 90%
  • Poor attendance between 70% – 80%
  • Concerning attendance less than 70%

Our teachers are currently completing assessments on learners to ensure they share the most updated progress on the report.

At the beginning of term 3 there will be the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss the report. If the teacher feels a meeting would benefit your child to support them with their learning they will reach out to you via Seesaw to arrange a time to meet. If you feel you would like to discuss something in the report you are able to make contact with the class teacher to arrange a time to meet. Feedback from last year indicated that some of you didn’t need to meet with the teacher but felt you ‘had to’. There is no requirement that you meet with the class teacher if you are happy with the progress your child is making.

BEING IN THE SCHOOL GROUNDS

We love having parents and caregivers onsite and working with our learners. We do ask the following, please.

  • If you are assisting a class with a lesson please sign in at the office for health and safety reasons.
  • If you are picking your child up at 3 pm please wait quietly outside the classroom until 3 pm. It is very disruptive when parents come into the classroom before 3 pm.
  • If your child is late to school it is important that they come to the office to let the office staff know so we can mark them as present on the school roll.
  • Please make sure you close the gate after you enter or leave the school grounds. This is to ensure the safety of our learners.
  • Please can you ensure that you meet with the teacher outside of learning time. The best way to meet with your child’s teacher is to request a meeting through Seesaw.

BAYVIEW MATARIKI SHOWCASE

On the 26th of June, Bayview School will be holding our first Matariki Showcase. We have modified the time due to illness amongst staff and our learners. This event will now run from 1.45 pm-4 pm. We will be showcasing our exploration of Matariki over the term through a range of curriculum areas, with displays in the hall and library.

We invite whānau, community, and friends to join us. We will begin the afternoon with a mihi whakatau (welcome) under the cola at 1.45 pm. There will be kite-flying, stalls with school produce and plants, and performances from our kapa haka and Showquest groups. The hall and library will be open to view our learning from 2 pm.
