KIA ORA TEAM BAYVIEW

We have had a fabulous start to term 2! Welcome to our new families 😊

Thank you for supporting us by ensuring your children gets to school on time. This really supports their progress and achievement. Regular attendance is key in supporting your child to make progress with their learning. The Ministry of Education has a strong focus on attendance and has developed clearer guidelines for schools and parents. The Ministry of Education’s new attendance categories are as follows:

• Excellent attendance greater than 90% (5 days off per term)
• Satisfactory attendance between 80% – 90% (6-10 days off per term)
• Poor attendance between 70% – 80% (11-29 days off per term)
• Concerning attendance less than 70% (more than 30 days off per term)

Bayview School has always had high expectations around attendance. Every morning our office staff review who is absent and the reasons why and if we have not received a notification through our website or voice mail then we try to make contact with parents. It is very helpful if you ensure you update contact details whenever these change including your address, your mobile number or email address 🙂If you are unsure if you have done this please check at the office as we can let you know what we have on file.

Thank you also for ensuring your child is in the correct uniform (especially those who have labelled school polar fleece items!) Our lost property items are outside Habitat 11 and you are welcome to go and have a look for anything that has not come home! Sometimes the children take the wrong polar fleece home. If this happens please just return it the next day so the teacher can make sure it goes back to the rightful owner. 

During term 2 and 3 we do not require learners to wear a sun hat at school but they are free to do so if they would like to when they are playing outside. We also have the option of a school beanie that our learners can wear during the really cold months. This can be purchased from Janbells alongside our other uniform items. Our learners are also welcome to bring some slippers to wear inside the classroom during the colder months!

If you purchased a school jacket at the end of term 1 you should have received this last week. Thank you for ensuring these are labelled/named so they can be returned if left lying around. 

PINK SHIRT DAY ’24

We will be having Pink Shirt Day on Friday May 17th.

Pink Shirt Day is about raising awareness for anti-bullying to provide a safe space for children and adults in school and the wider community. We encourage everyone to wear something red or pink to school on that Friday and if possible to donate a gold coin.

This year we will be holding the following activities on the day:

• We are having a warm fuzzy box in the library where people can write kind notes and then when you are feeling sad or emotional you can take one and read it to yourself to make you feel better.
• We will have a lolly jar for a raffle draw to enter, you need to complete a random acts of kindness bingo chart and you can guess how many lollies are inside.
• Another activity for the teachers and the students is to use chalk on the court drawing nice things and compliments that everyone can read.

That’s what we’re planning for Pink Shirt Day!

SCHOOL RAFFLE

This term the wonderful Anne Crooks is organising another school raffle. All funds raised will go towards the construction of a new play area in our central courtyard. If you would like to see the kind of things we are looking at check out www.compassplaygrounds.co.nz as an example.

Raffle books will come home to each family on Monday 13th May. We hope you can get family and friends on board to purchase a ticket!

SCHOOL POLICIES

All our school policies are developed and owned by the Board of Trustees.  These can be found on www.schooldocs.co.nz (Username: Bayview  Password: icare). All our school policies are reviewed regulary by the board and by lawyers associated with SchoolDocs our database provider. When you enrol at Bayview School you sign an enrolment form which says you agree to abide by all school policies so it is worth checking these out.

TRANSITIONING INTO SCHOOL

At Bayview School we understand the importance of a smooth transition from Early Childhood to school. To support children and their whānau with this we start with an enrolment meeting with our new entrant liaison teacher to get to know your child. From there we place children in the class that we feel is the best fit for them. We then have a whānau connection meeting with your child’s classroom teacher to get to know each other. Each child has at least two visits before their first day. We think communication is really important during this process and so we will keep you regularly updated with how your child is settling in.

READY 4 LEARNING

At Bayview School we recognise that children start school with varying skills and at different levels, and we aim to cater our programme to meet their individual learning needs. We follow the Ready 4 Learning framework which helps support the foundational skills learners need to successfully access the NZ Curriculum. These foundational skills include; book awareness, visual perception and memory, gross and fine motor skills, phonological awareness, and speaking confidently and clearly. If your child is working on their foundation skills their report at mid year or end of year will be based on this. This is a strong feature within our Year 0/1 habitats.

BAYVIEW MATARIKI SHOWCASE

On the 26th of June, Bayview School will be holding our first Matariki Showcase. This event will run from 1pm-5:30pm. We will be showcasing our exploration of Matariki over the term through a range of curriculum areas, with displays in the hall and library.

We invite whānau, community and friends to join us. There will be kite-flying, stalls with school produce and plants, and performances from our kapa haka and Showquest groups. The hall and library will be open to view our learning from 1pm, with other activities to begin after school.

We can’t wait to share our learning around Matariki with you all!

STAFF

Sadly at the end of term 1 we had to farewell Trudy McKeich. Trudy decided to teach Year 5/6 learners and to do that she moved to Verran’s school. Trudy was our classroom release teacher in 2024 and was responsible for immersing our learners in the Garden to table progrgramme. Trudy worked incredibly hard to provide inspiring learning opportunities for learners and we will miss her passion and unique perspective..

This decision was made quite suddenly and became official after the last newsletter for term 1. We did hold a farewell for Trudy in the last week of term 1. We know you will join us in wishing her well in her new role.

Also at the end of term 1, we farewelled Jean Newbold. Jean has been our reading recovery teacher (and for a while our ESOL teacher) for over 17 years. Jean made the difficult decision to retire from education. We farewelled Jean with a special high tea and sent her off to spend lots of quality time with her grandchildren. We thank Jean for her many years of service and for the colour she brought to our staff.

Megan McGuire has also taken some extended leave to travel around Europe. Megan will be based in London but is fulfilling her dream of visiting many countries in Europe and beyond. Megan rejoins us for the 2025 school year. We wish her every joy and safety in her travels! We can’t wait to get her postcards!

YEAR 6 LEARNERS

If you live in the Bayview School enrolment zone then your year 6 child will be in zone for Glenfield Intermediate School. Glenfield have the following events you may be interested in:

29th May – 2.30pm Mark Whitford will be having a question and answer session in the Bayview School staffroom for parents.

14th June – all year 6 learners visit GIS for their showcase.

22nd August – all Year 6 learners visit GIS for the day.

Please note that if you live out of the zone for your chosen intermediate school you will need to complete an out-of-zone enrolment. Information about this can be found on the intermediate’s school website.
