PINK SHIRT DAY ’24
Pink Shirt Day was a huge success this year. A big thank you to Ethan Li, Olive Hoy and Anton Arada for organising this for 2024! It was lovely seeing a sea of pink and red with most of our children getting behind the anti bullying message!
I thought it timely to share with you our guidelines around bullying as it is a phrase that is often used incorrectly. Sadly like every other school in Aotearoa we have incidents of bullying and hurtful behaviour that occur and once we know about them we deal with them quickly.
DEFINITION
Bayview has adopted the following definition of bullying: Bullying is repeated behaviour that intentionally hurts another person, physically, emotionally or mentally.
Bullying usually has three common features:
» it is deliberate, hurtful behaviour
» it is repeated often over a period of time
» it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves
There are three main types of bullying:
» physical; hitting, kicking, taking belongings
» verbal; name-calling, insulting, racist remarks
» indirect; spreading nasty stories, excluding from groups
- All members of our school have a responsibility to recognise bullying and to take action when they are aware of it happening.
- It is important that bullying is separated from just silly behaviour or accidents where someone gets bumped into. Bullying is when someone is deliberately and repeatedly targeted.
- A Keeping Ourselves Safe programme is run on average every 2 years. We have worked through this programme this year in term 1 with some final lessons being taken this term.
- All staff treat any report of bullying seriously and take action immediately.
- Staff will fully investigate a reported issue to clarify exactly what has been happening and if necessary will involve a member of the leadership team.
- Our emphasis will be on changing the behaviour of the bully while providing support and empowerment for the student who has been bullied. It is very important that any victim is given the skills to deal with any incidents moving forward as we want to empower them to take action.
Sometimes incidents of bullying are not reported to the class teacher. At Bayview our aim is to empower our learners to speak up and inform an adult if they are not feeling safe. Sometimes this means a child will tell their parent and if this is the case we rely on the parent to make contact with the class teacher to try to resolve this issue. If your child does disclose something to you please reach out to their class teacher via email or Seesaw to make an appointment to talk about this. Once we know there is a problem we deal with it straight away!
There are many reasons why a child or person bullies another. Through investigating and finding the function of the behaviour we can teach the appropriate and desired skills to support that person to make better choices.
It’s a timely reminder that children learn most by watching the adults around them. If they witness high emotional intelligence and good conflict resolution skills from the adults around them at school and in the community, they will display high emotional intelligence and use good conflict resolution skills themselves.
DIGITAL LITERACY
At Bayview School we understand that digital technology has a vital role in teaching and learning, and is a part of our daily lives. In a world that is constantly evolving with technology, it is important to teach our tamariki to become digitally literate and capable individuals. In our Habitats, we have shared classroom chromebooks and iPads to support students’ learning. Students who are Year 3-6 are able to bring their own devices to school with our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) programme, enabling them personal access to a device, when required.
At school, we encourage our students to use technology effectively and responsibly, providing them with the necessary skills to safely navigate online digital spaces. It is important for students to understand about the digital world, the challenges they can face and how to manage them effectively. This is essential in developing good online safety habits and digital citizenship. Our senior learners engage in ‘Hectors World’ digital safety programme to support them with their digital literacy and online safety. We encourage students to continue practising positive digital technology behaviours outside of school. This can be supported at home by having open conversations with your tamariki about their internet use and online safety.

A huge congratulations to Elisha and Chloe Im who recently participated in the North Shore Primary School Swimming competition earlier this month. They participated in the 25m backstroke, freestyle breaststroke and butterfly.
Chloe represented the 8 year olds and placed 12th out of 25 in the 25m breaststroke!
Elisha placed 6th out of 27 competitors in the 10 year old 25m backstroke and a stunning 8th out of 24 in the 50m freestyle! Fantastic results and congratulations to you both.
Elisha will compete in the United Cheer Championship in Wellington on the 16th of June. Good luck and we look forward to hearing how you go!
