KIA ORA TEAM BAYVIEW
Can you believe how quickly this term has gone. We only have 2 weeks left before the October term break.
BAYVIEW EXPO
On Wednesday 18th September we will be holding an expo after school to share some of the work we are doing in structured literacy, mastery maths, and positive culture for learning realms. The schedule of sessions is at the end of this newsletter. You do not have to book into any session but can just turn up to your preference on the day. We hope you will come and join us.
STRUCTURED LITERACY
You may have heard the term ‘structured literacy’ bandied about in the media recently. The government has mandated that all schools must teach structured literacy and mastery maths from the start of the 2024 school year. As of yet the curricula in these two areas are not yet finalised but this should be finalised early in term 4. At this stage, I can tell you that at Bayview School we already teach ‘structured literacy’ and use the platform of iDeaL to do this. We also teach mastery maths and specifically in Year 2-4 we use Maths No Problem and in Years 5-6 we use Dragon maths. At year 0-1 we are trialling different programmes to determine the best fit for our learners.
Currently we have our Year 0-3 teachers attending mandated professional learning in structured literacy and next year we hope this will be available for our Year 4-6 teachers. This week we have been informed by the Ministry of Education that we can utilise 2 teacher only days in 2025 to support teachers to understand the new maths curriculum. At this stage we have not decided when these days will be as we have not been told by the MOE what supports will be available and exactly which programme providers schools will be able to access in 2025.
We are being patient waiting for the MOE to release more information but are confident we are already on the journey to ensure our learners have the best educational opportunities.
BOOK FAIR
Thank you to everyone who came along to our annual book fair. We sold lots of books and merchandise. As a result of strong sales, we will be able to purchase a range of new books for our library!
DAFFODIL DAY
Thank you to everyone who donated to our annual daffodil day fundraiser. We managed to raise just short of $500 to go to the Cancer society to support people and families going through the cancer journey. This is such a worthy cause that affects most of us during our lifetimes!
DISCO:
On Thursday 26th September from 5pm-6.30pm we will hold an end-of-term disco for Bayview School students! We are getting in early before daylight saving begins on the 29th of September! Tickets are $5 for a ticket and a glow stick, or a combo will be $10 which includes a bag of chips, a bag of lollies, a drink, and a glow stick (and entry of course!).
Please note that the children will not be allowed to walk home by themselves. An adult will need to come and pick them up at 6.30pm.
Please note the earlier time. This is so that our hall hirers can still use the hall that evening.
OUT-OF-ZONE ENROLMENTS
Please note our out-of-zone enrolments for children wanting to start during 2025 are now open. We only have 20 places available for 2025. If you do not live in the Bayview School zone and have a child due to start school during 2025 then an out-of-zone enrolment will be necessary.
Please note that out-of-zone enrolments for most other schools are also open during this time.
A gentle reminder for parents of children attending intermediate school next year that enrolments are due now. The intermediates need to know their student numbers for 2025 so they can ensure they have enough staff.
